Delima is one of the best Indonesian restaurants I have come across in Sydney. Great flavours, and authentic use of Indonesian spices.

This time we had:

  • Meehun Goreng – Stir-fry vermicelli noodle with seafood (17.95). This was delicious, recommend this or the Mee Goreng (thick yellow noodles).
  • Tempe Tahu Kuning – Indonesian style seasoned deep fried tofu and deep fried fermented yellow bean blocks. Served with dried shrimp chili paste (14.95). To be honest, not a massive fan of this, I don’t particularly like the dry texture of it, however in fairness it is done well.
  • Ayam Kari – Old times favorite Sumatran curry chicken (19.95). This is a thumbs up, great full flavoured dish with rich gravy and tender chicken pieces which go so well with the coconut rice.
  • Ikan Sambal Balado – Deep fried fish fillet topped with Indonesian style garlic and chili based sauce (24.95). This is a great dish, fish is cooked perfectly and the sauce is flavour-full. Though not for the faint-chilli-hearted. This dish really packs a punch chill-wise. Even I have a tongue burning sensation after a couple of bits of this.
  • Coconut rice & sambal chilli. The coconut rice is well worth ordering. It is moreish to eat even by itself.

RwUVsk1394872767This is now on my favourites list. Delicious.

The cafe is tiny, hardly any sitting space, a small tight alcove in the cafe and two bench/crate areas in the outside front space of the shop. They have many little tempting dessert choices. Panna Cotta, creme brulee tarts, flourless chocolate and hazelnut torte… are just a few.

kpvffW1394872735aFg6Jg1394872688  Xp4GsC1394872843woz8os1394872655V8QDej1394872806

EYYzgK1394873093I had the watermelon cake for the first time. At 7.5 a slice it’s not cheap, but definitely well worth it with every mouthful!

It has an amazing almond meal base, then what tastes like a version of chantilly cream, a watermelon layer, more cream, another almond meal later, then jelly which taste like it has rose water in it, fresh strawberries, and edible flowers. mhjVUr1394872568It is a fragrant and spectacular dessert, enough to impress even the most discerning dessert connoisseur. The only downside to this dessert is in the eating, as you cut through it with a fork or spoon, the watermelon then squishes all of the bottom layer cream out of the cake and it becomes very messy to eat! I understand that they put the cream underneath the watermelon so the watermelon doesn’t make the cake base soggy… but still it makes it rather hard to eat in one graceful fork-full!

wqO6Im1394873011Next on to the quiches. We got a Shirley (mushrooms with fine herbs) and Betty (Goats cheese and leek) 6.5 each. Both were great, the pastry was flaky and buttery. The mixture was melt-in-the-mouth. I loved the Betty quiche the best out of the two.

Chef’s Gallery is a great dumpling and hand-made noodle place in the heart of the Sydney CBD. Consistently good quality food, vLDMvW1394872236consistently crowded, and in my experience the food always looks like the picture in the menu.

The beef noodle soup, is pretty impressive. Flavourful and full-bodied soup stock, lots of tender beef strips and handmade spinach noodles. It is a very large satisfying bowl. 15.9

BPRm731394872406 Next we ordered:

  • Shredded peking duck with cucumber and hoisin sauce rolled inside a fluffy Chinese roti (6pcs) 16.8. Very well put together, great flavour.

e34YpI1394872270

  • Crispy fried savoury daikon radish cakes with diced Chinese sausage and minced dried prawns (4pcs) 9.9. Tasty little morsels. I liked the fine golden brown crumbs on the outside.

  • lighly pan fried prawn pot stickersDUPmMQ1394872380 using jumbo prawns wrapped in a pastry (6pcs) (13.9). This never fails to be a pleaser. The prawns are always so plump and succulent and the pastry has a great bite and crunch to it.

HFsGWC1394872469

  • Squid ink handmade noodles wok fried with mussels and calamari tubes braised with Chinese rice wine on a buttery garlic sauce (20.9). ( I have to say these are nice, but I still prefer the spinach noodles wok fried with seafood, with dried prawn roe (19.9)jOaBC41394872333

  • Last, but not least, we ordered the ‘chef’s own handmade egg and spinach tofu, lightly fried, topped with preserved vegetables’ (14.9). Beautifully executed, and one of my favourite dishes.

This time instead of the high tea, we decided to order:KmWmBu1394871676

  • Devonshire Tea (Scone Basket) – two scones, baked on the premise, double thick cream and one gourmet jam, served with a drink of choice (12.5).
  • Ploughman’s Lunch – Freshly baked cheese scones, served with vintage cheddar, salami, ham, ploughman’s chutney, fig & ginger jam, butter, dates and apple wedges (15).
  • Nanna’s Apple Pie tea and rose hip tea (4.5 each).

CKuQi01394871785The cherry and almond scone, and the cheese scones in the ploughman’s lunch were both very impressive. I would order these in a heartbeat again. The Ploughman’s lunch was very satisfying, and I particularly enjoyed the sweet/savoury combination of flavours. StomBl1394871935

After trying ‘nanna’s apple pie’ tea, it has become my new favourite tea. So fragrant, it almost makes you not miss the real thing… (almost). Well worth trying.oRlSBY1394871466

A very recent expansion is their ‘take-away’ scones, cream and jam from the shop. It looks so cute! The Tea Cosy also have a pop up stall at the rocks market which sell their take-away range. I am looking forward to trying it.

Once you go up the ramp, you walk into an open, airy space with the counter and barristers on the right and rustic, soothing decor.  We ordered:

  • poached eggs, ricotta, mushrooms and sough dough toast; and a
  • tuna melt

jGu2pr1394871238o1aRcn1394871213The food was great and fresh. The poached eggs were lovely and runny. I love ricotta and mushroom together. The tuna melt was great too, chunks of tuna, hard xpvaWm1394871184boiled eggs, asparagus, lettuce and melted cheese.

The desserts looked decent… and I was contemplating trying it, but next to Newtown: Black Star Pastry and Cafe, I have to say I choose to use my calories on Black Star Pastry and Cafe, whilst in Newtown.

Overall, a satisfying brunch experience.

We sat down for lunch, and bought take-away desserts this time around. Y4eOWF1394868388

For lunch we decided to have the bacon and caramelised onion quiche with salad and the john scroll. Everything was absolutely divine. The salad was one of the best I have had in a while. The highlight was the sweet juicy pears shaved into the rocket, so there is sweet and salty bursts of flavour in your mouth as you tucked into the well dressed salad. I loved the caramalised onion in the quiche, and the pastry was light, crumbly and melt-in-your-mouth. The john scroll also never fails to impress with the oozey egg yolk center as you cut into it.

QMaQCq13948679483I62PP1394868108

pRLCvW1394869990For the take-away desserts we had:

  • berry mousse cake
  • pistachio and honey mousse cake
  • strawberry fields forever tart
  • custard tart
  • little petite fours and
  • chocolate eclair

Berry mousse cake – the bottom is a cake base, TljhV51394870111but a little denser than a sponge cake, more like an almond meal consistency, the sweetness of the base balances the berry mousse which has a great sweet but tart taste to it. Really like the fresh strawberries on top, not a huge fan of the white chocolate, but that is very minor. Freeze dried strawberries around the cake are a nice texture touch.

Pistachio and honey mousse cake – loved the tiny RYaPVP1394870303pistachio marshmallow cubes. This was the sweetest cake out of the ones I tried this time around. But a great balance of flavours. Reminds me a little of a modernised Greek dessert. Pistachio cake base, honey mousse and honey jelly layer on top. The pistachio nuts on the top are a bit salty which counter the sweetness on your tongue. Great dessert.

JoJYdg1394870249

Strawberry fields forever tart – The pastry shell is really, light, thin and buttery. The filling is what makes this tart stand out. It is extremely light, not too sweet, and melts on the mouth, with a hint of champagne. I think it also has a champagne thin jelly layer on top of the tart. Goes well with the fresh tartness of the strawberry. It surely does not taste like a dense, sickly sweet custard you can sometimes find in not so good fruit tarts.

Still my favourite dessert, the custard is ux1ENo1394870217lovely, creamy, but not too heavy. Light, thin, crumbly but crispy tart shell. The stand out for this is that it remains not too sweet, but definitely satisfies my sweet tooth craving.

The mini petite fours were lovely, as expected. 5ic4Du1394870044

Chocolate Éclair – I have to state up-front. Not a fan of éclairs typically. Mainly because I don’t like the custard filling. But this is very well done. Shoe pastry was great, nothing to fault. Custard was light and not too sweet. And the hard chocolate top gave a nice texture to the dessert.
hxZmgN1394870181gLg42C1394868424igM8qE13948685552ZzEgs1394868665

Finally … the rosemary, potato and truffle bread – highly recommend this. You can smell it even before you get it home and take it out of the bag. Delicious on its own or just with a little bit of butter.

Ashfield: New Shanghai

This is one of my number one dumpling ‘go-to’ places. This fits into the same category as Shanghai Night, which has two outlets, one on either side of New Shanghai. (The quote ‘ours is not to reason why’ comes to mind). The only difference is, that New Shanghai’s food I think is a little more consistent, and they also recently renovated which has seemed to draws in more crowds and patrons.

Now to the food! I particularly like the fried juicy pork buns and find it hard not to order it, every time I visit. This is similar to xiao long bao, which has a bit of soup hidden inside the dumpling, along with the succulent pork mince. So try to avoid burning your tongue on the hot soup and steam trapped inside the bun! I also love their pot-sticker dumplings and variety of fried and steamed dumplings.

This time we chose:

  • beef brisket hot pot
  • rice
  • fried juicy pork buns
